Displacement

but the water wouldn’t rush back—

the ripples echoes out
on & on
the empty
never filling
as if the ship remained

the rocks peered
from the watery below
their eyes gone cold
the shadows of the ripples
wavering in a seasick misery
over their smooth silence

how does displacement
become an encompassment?

time keeps moving
liquid in the light
there is a nothing
whole, this hole, this nothing
gaping in the night
